Overlooking Fisher Island, the Atlantic Ocean, and Biscayne Bay, this Portofino Tower penthouse was transformed from an aging waterfront residence into a refined, multi-generational retreat designed for decades of family life.
The homeowners, longtime residents of the Northeast, had enjoyed the residence for years but recognized that it no longer reflected the way their family gathered or lived. Rather than simply updating finishes, the renovation focused on fundamentally improving how the home functioned—opening views, strengthening the relationship between adjoining spaces, and creating a more relaxed, contemporary environment for entertaining and everyday living.
One of the most significant design interventions occurred immediately upon entering the residence. A built-in semicircular bar that interrupted the connection between the foyer, living room, and dining room was removed, restoring a clear visual axis through the home and allowing natural light and panoramic waterfront views to extend uninterrupted across the principal living spaces. The result is a residence that feels brighter, more expansive, and inherently connected to its remarkable setting.
The comprehensive remodel included the complete transformation of the primary suite, secondary bedrooms, bathrooms, living room, dining room, custom millwork, lighting, finishes, and furnishings, while selectively preserving elements of the existing kitchen at the homeowners’ request. Throughout the residence, transitional furnishings are layered with contemporary accents, natural materials, custom wallcoverings, forged metal, stone, and a curated collection of black-and-white artwork, creating interiors that are refined, inviting, and quietly expressive rather than trend-driven.
At the heart of the project is a completely reimagined primary bathroom. The original layout was replaced with a spa-inspired composition featuring a generous glass-enclosed shower, a separate water closet screened by a frosted glass partition with integrated bench and ledge, a sculptural soaking tub, and a custom waterfall faucet emerging seamlessly through an illuminated mirror. A smoke crystal chandelier introduces an unexpected sense of romance, establishing a visual dialogue with the adjoining bedroom while reinforcing the residence’s layered, eclectic character.
Rather than imposing a signature aesthetic, the design responds to the architecture, the extraordinary waterfront setting, and the lives of the family who will continue to gather here for generations. The result is a home that feels timeless, highly personal, and entirely its own.
