The challenging 10 acre hillside site for this residential development necessitated an approach engaged in the landscape both experientally and pragmatically. Acting as viewing devices, the three programmed volumes of the main house orient toward views of the ocean and the surrounding mountains. A path along a long retaining wall connects the main house, guest house, and stables. In plan, the datum separates cultivated garden and wild native plantings, formal entry from private path. In section it divides conditioned space from service space, nesting the garage into the hillside and supporting the cantilevered living spaces above.
