The Historical and Cultural District Renovation Project of Old Taihe Town in China, launched in 2021 in Meishan City, Sichuan Province, is an epoch-making project driven by the dual missions of perpetuating Meishan's urban culture and revitalizing the community.
In the context of the central government's promotion of historical and cultural protection and inheritance system, the project innovatively introduces the methodology of evaluation and protection of cultural heritage values, primarily cultural and social values, to fully protect 11 historical streets and alleys, two officially protected cultural heritage units, 58 historical buildings, and nine intangible cultural heritage of traditional skills. The project has also achieved the objective of increasing the employment and income of the inhabitants. The strategies of sustainable development were carried out through a series of technological innovations during the implementation of the project, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has included them in the "14th Five-Year Plan" of the State Key Research and Development Program for promotion.
The project has successfully vitalized this traditional community with more than 2,000 years of history, provided a replicable Chinese solution for preserving and renewing high-density conventional neighborhoods, and realized a multidimensional balance of historical heritage, community revitalization, and sustainable development.
