Xuzhou Int'l Academic Exchange Center integrates six functions as Innovation Valley's hub and Yunlong Lake landmark. Cascading terraces blend with mountains, expert apartments nestled within, creating natural, dynamic ambience.
I. Courtyard Spaces & Efficient Organization
The design uses enclosed courtyards to organize space. Architecture "emerges" from the 14m-sloping terrain (higher southeast/near mountains). Volumes step upward west-to-east. Transitioning from urban to natural contexts, large symmetrical conference/dining areas shift to smaller guest rooms. Winding courtyards transition from compact entrance plazas to expansive garden courtyards. Culminating interlocked volumes frame interactive conference courtyards. Water embodies Jiangnan garden essence—its dynamics, light, and sound create the center's poetic ambience.
II. Eco-Innovation & Open Nature
"Ecology, Innovation, Openness, Nature" guide the design. Sunken courtyards, terraced buildings, and varied topography blur architecture–landscape boundaries. Integrated indoor–outdoor spaces provide scenic leisure areas. A central water courtyard regulates microclimate. Permeable paving, sunken greens, solar skylights, and green roofs establish green-building benchmarks.
III. Cultural Continuity & Values
Modern techniques reinterpret Xuzhou’s traditions. Neo-Chinese sloped roofs unify structures. The main entrance’s extended pitched roof highlights cultural identity. Flanking buildings feature minimalist colonnades with abstracted traditional eave details. Lobbies use wood panels and gray-blue tiles. Glass skylights in roofs merge tradition with modernity, forging Xuzhou’s new architectural identity.
