"China Yangshao·Miaodigou Site Museum: Integrating Heritage and Modernity
Situated in Sanmenxia's business district adjacent to Miaodigou Site Park, the China Yangshao·Miaodigou Site Museum resolves critical tensions between urban density and natural park terrain, contemporary cityscape and 5,000-year Yangshao cultural legacy, and modern museum functions versus ancient cultural symbolism.
The design prioritizes preservation of the site park's ecological and historical integrity, fully conserving the southwest loess platform ruins. Employing an earth-covered strategy with the main structure submerged underground, the building manifests a 'fusion' concept through seven staggered wedge-shaped volumes. This configuration organically integrates park greenery with an urban plaza, while the roofscape (fifth facade) blends into the topography. Facades of stacked triangular forms harmonize with the landscape, featuring accessible slopes enabling public rooftop circulation for panoramic park engagement.
Materially, GRC panels mirror the loess environment, while a layered facade system—glass curtain wall with metal sunshade grilles—abstractly interprets Miaodigou painted pottery heritage. Metal plates act as pixels to digitally reinterpret the traditional bean pod pattern.
Functionally, the seven wedges house permanent/temporary exhibitions, visitor interaction zones, research facilities, and logistics, establishing a heritage-modern synthesis. Optimized segregated circulation enhances operational efficiency. The design innovatively adapts Shanzhou's pit courtyard typology, providing natural illumination to public interiors and demonstrating energy-conscious green architecture.
As a cultural conduit, the museum employs modern exhibition techniques to articulate Yangshao narratives. Its integrated rooftop walkway and park interface elevate civic spatial quality, establishing a defining urban cultural landmark."
