The client approached Studio Toggle to design a holistic retreat comprising a private ceramic studio and a social Dewaniya set within a landscaped garden. This project is envisioned as a sanctuary that nurtures solitude, community, creativity, and contemplation. Inspired by traditional Arab vernacular architecture, the design navigates the hierarchies of privacy and openness, ensuring an intentional and fluid movement through its spaces.
At the heart of the concept lies a journey of renewal. As inhabitants pass through a series of portals, they transition through degrees of enclosure, guided by light, shadow, and water. The design references the traditional Lewan and Hosh, where long porticos extend an invitation to linger, pause, and reconnect. These shaded colonnades frame vistas of the garden while regulating light and airflow, enhancing thermal comfort. The choreography of space encourages introspection, making each passage an act of transition akin to a ritual of cleansing and renewal.
Water, an essential element in Moorish and Andalusian architecture, is reinterpreted through carefully positioned fountains and narrow channels. These features are not merely ornamental but serve as passive cooling devices, harnessing evaporative cooling to temper the desert heat. The gentle murmur of flowing water enriches the sensory experience, creating a meditative backdrop to the space and reinforcing its restorative essence.
Constructed from rammed earth, the project embraces sustainability at its core. The earthen walls, with their warm desert hues, provide excellent thermal insulation, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling while seamlessly integrating the structure into its arid surroundings. The materiality enhances the tactility of the spaces, where every surface holds the memory of the land from which it was shaped. The interplay of light and shadow across these textured walls further deepens the ethereal quality of the space, reinforcing the project’s identity as a place of healing, contemplation, and renewal.
