Located in the centre of Floréal, So’Flo is conceived as a boutique retail destination that reinterprets the shopping mall as a more intimate, landscape-driven experience. The project is carefully integrated within a mature, tree-filled site, allowing existing vegetation to shape both the layout and the spatial identity of the development.
A defining element of the project is the entrance sequence, anchored by a reinterpreted Plantation House. Built on the exact footprint of a former 19th-century residence once occupied by bishops, this structure establishes a strong sense of continuity with the site’s history. It acts as both a point of arrival and a symbolic threshold, connecting past and present through a contemporary architectural language.
The planning strategy prioritises permeability and connection to nature. Circulation paths are organised around existing trees, creating a series of open and shaded spaces that encourage movement, pause, and interaction. This approach softens the retail experience, shifting it from a purely transactional environment to one that is more experiential and contextual.
The project required a highly responsive design and delivery process. Preserving the maximum number of existing trees introduced complexity in both planning and construction, while a fast-track programme demanded precision and coordination across all stages. Despite these constraints, the development was completed on schedule, opening in November 2017.
Recognised at the International Property Awards 2018–2019, So’Flo demonstrates how retail environments can evolve — balancing commercial function with environmental sensitivity and cultural continuity, while offering a more grounded and human-scaled experience.
