The lighting at the new library was designed to enhance the architecture and user experience. The most significant challenge for the design team was to develop a “kit of parts” that could be applied to the variety of architectural conditions. Daylighting was a major design factor and automatic switching controls were implemented to conserve energy. The main entry lobby used recessed metal halide downlights and metal halide projector lamp fixtures, mounted to glass and steel ceiling systems. Ambient lighting systems originated from the ground plane using high efficiency T5 and CFL fluorescent lighting systems, integrated into walls and above enclosed rooms. Task lights were located at reading tables.
