This new 40m span bridge crossing enhances recreational trail connectivity through the Lower Don River Valley, one of Toronto’s primary ravine systems, connecting the main north-south trail with the new Bayview Avenue Multi-Use Path.
The bridge utilizes a simple pallette of materials appropriate to the Lower Don context - weathering steel, galvanized steel, concrete, wood and stone – to help this low-cost structure fit with its small-scale river setting. Galvanized picket railings provide visual lightness and contrast with the weathering steel trusses. Rectangular approach walls of weathering steel plate lined with rough-sawn local wood frame the entry points to the bridge; adjoining large-scale limestone blocks help transition to the valley landscape.
