A well-designed valley crossing is an extension of the public realm, where people feel comfortable, welcome and safe -- a place to pause, appreciate the surroundings, rest, meet friends and, in the case of Burgoyne Bridge, learn about the region’s rich history.
Plazas at the north and south approaches frame the overall composition and create a dramatic sense of entry for pedestrians and motorists alike. The plazas are defined by rows of light columns fabricated from steel salvaged from the 1915 bridge. While subtle and understated, so as to respect the natural context, the lighting achieves a dramatic effect by night, highlighted by the accent lighting along the arch. An “interpretive window” element graphically commemorates the original steel truss bridge while framing a view to the new structure.
The main bridge span is supported by a distinctive open-truss arch. The scale is grand, but the slenderness of individual components and the openness between members create a sense of lightness and transparency that complements the natural setting. Designed for a 100-year life span, the bridge features high quality finishes and durable materials that provide enduring visual quality with minimal maintenance.
