The Rideau Canal is a designated World Heritage Site linking the Ottawa River at Parliament Hill to St. Lawrence Seaway near Kingston. In Ottawa it is a key recreational resource and entrance to the Parliamentary Precinct. The 46m span footbridge provides a key pedestrian connection between the downtown core and the University of Ottawa.
The bridge’s contemporary design expresses the architectural and structural technology of its time, yet shows respect for its Rideau heritage by “touching it lightly” and using traditional high quality materials. Railings are stainless steel with bent bronze plate handrail that responds to Ottawa’s architectural legacy of copper and bronze usage. It also contains integrated LED lighting that provides a gentle concealed wash of light over the walking surface.
