The Ocean Estuary project is situated at the end of Fulford Harbour on the south of Salt Spring Island, BC. The site once served as the home for the Fulford Inn from 1977 to 2010 until it burned down several years ago. It was the south island community’s gathering spot. The new project seeks to reactivate this energy by creating a commercial core offering retail space for local artists and a restaurant with music venue for casual outdoor concerts as well as 24 cabins for overnight guests.
The design rationale and project priorities included the following:
• conservation of natural ecology: ecological connectivity, low-impact building design, nature-based access, and comprehensive water conservation measures will preserve and enhance the site's natural environment.
• community engagement: interconnected network of public pathways and a central village square will create a vibrant destination for gathering, recreation, and exploration of the island’s natural surroundings.
• ease of access: site is designed for accessible and efficient movement, with connected circulation routes, accessible accommodations, emergency access, and ample parking for vehicles and bicycles.
• maximum daylighting and views: thoughtful building orientation and landscaping optimize daylight, minimize shading, and frame exceptional views of the site's natural and waterfront surroundings.
• private and public comfort: site is organized to create active, inviting public areas while preserving privacy and tranquility within guest accommodations.
• building form and materials: buildings are thoughtfully designed to reflect the island’s unique landscape and heritage while creating inviting spaces for gathering, rest, and connection.
The design’s origin is strongly influenced by the site’s rich ecology and unique geological history. Directly under the site is the Fulford Thrust fault, where two completely diverse and contrasting geological systems converge. As such, the architecture and landscape design respond to this convergence by emphasizing these contrasts through the execution of massing, choice of materials, and siting of buildings.
The Ocean Estuary Project is situated directly over the Fulford Thrust fault. A thrust fault is a break in the Earth’s crust in which older rocks are pushed above younger rocks. In the case of the Fulford Thrust, the Salt Spring Intrusion has been pushed above over the younger Haslam Formation Shale. The Haslam Formation is a black shale geologic formation that dates back to the Santonian Epoch of the Cretaceous period and preserves primarily marine fossils with the Salt Spring Intrusion being made up of granite and granodiorite. The shapes, materials and language of the landscape influenced the architecture and landscaping which mimics the island’s geology.
