The new Langley Memorial Hospital Emergency Department, unveiled in May 2021, marks a significant step forward for Fraser Health Authority’s commitment to enhancing critical care accessibility for Langley’s growing population. The project is a one-storey addition to expand the existing Emergency Department, which includes five treatment zones defined by level of acuity.
KRA, as architect and managing consultant, designed the ED Expansion and reimagined the hospital’s main entrance, creating a modern, accessible, and aesthetically dynamic design. Drawing inspiration from Langley Memorial Hospital’s original façade and surrounding landscape, the exterior brick design of the new addition blends seamlessly with the existing hospital.
The exterior design of the building complements the vocabulary of the existing buildings on the hospital campus using Interstate Brick in Ash, a warm toned clay brick with a matte texture, that complements the façade of the original hospital, while also creating depth and differentiation to the Emergency Department. The project was awarded a Masonry Institute of BC Award of Merit, for the unique push and pull brick pattern, inspired by the surrounding Garibaldi mountain range and integrated into the running bond creating a dynamic architectural façade. The brick pattern creates a captivating interplay of light and shadow that changes throughout the day and provides visual interest to the corners of the building.
The building welcomes abundant natural daylight through the use of a 20′ high central spine with expansive clerestory windows acting as a main street connecting the five treatment zones. The waiting rooms for each zone are located just off of the central spine accessing plenty of borrowed natural daylight.
The accent colours used within the Emergency Department are specific to the different treatment zones and support patient wayfinding. Each of the five treatment Zones is colour coded for ease of navigation with the colours being used in the flooring materials, furniture, and interior graphics.
Situated within the hospital’s new main entrance, the new lobby connects directly with the former main lobby. As a result, KRA’s objective was to ensure a smooth transition between these areas. As the team had recently completed the new MRI Unit on site, in addition to the new ED, the team aimed to integrate design elements from both departments into the lobby. This approach was intended to establish a unified aesthetic for Langley Memorial Hospital. The design of the new lobby, characterized by wood slats and a graphic mural, reflects elements from the ED. Additionally, a vertical fluted texture extends onto the façade of the reception desks, mirroring the design of the MRI reception area.
In essence, the Langley Memorial Hospital Emergency Department delivers critical care with an architecturally compelling solution, fostering a sense of warmth and welcome for all those who visit the hospital.
