776 Kingsway is located in the Kensington-Cedar Cottage neighborhood. Originally designed by architect Swinburne A. Kayll, the building at 776 Kingsway dates back to the late 1940’s–early 1950’s and is reminiscent of the Art Deco/Modern style. Kayll has been recognized for other work in this style, including the historically designated Village Theatre located in the town centre of Qualicum Beach.
KRA’s work included a base building upgrade that supported a change of use. Practical upgrades included new mechanical and electrical systems, envelope improvements, new window and doors, new washrooms and fire exits to comply with Building Code, leveling the floor and some structural work.
The goal of the project was to revitalize and modernize the existing form, including the architectural style and material selection. The sensitive rehabilitation retained the original structure and cladding where possible. The result is an iconic building that is both reflective of a bygone era of architecture in Vancouver and a modern gem in the community.
The updated style and detailing are respectful of the building’s original style, with modern finishes to create a more contemporary look. The result of this restoration is an iconic building that is both reflective of a bygone era of architecture in Vancouver and a modern restoration of a unique building in the Kingsway area.
The project’s partnership between KRA and Bon Constructors allowed for a great deal of flexibility, collaboration and integration during both design and construction.
