The BC Biomanufacturing Training Facility at BCIT’s Aerospace Technology Campus in Richmond, BC, is a state-of-the-art facility addressing critical skills gaps in the biopharmaceutical industry and supporting BC’s fastest-growing life sciences sector. It provides hands-on training to over 700 people annually, equipping them with practical skills using pilot-scale biomanufacturing equipment, world-class laboratories, and classrooms.
The renovation fully reimagined the interior, removing all existing partitions to create a modern, flexible training environment that meets the Client’s specialized simulation lab and classroom needs. The new space plan meets the Client’s programmatic requirements and new ceilings, lighting, finishes, and custom millwork were introduced to reflect the Client’s brand identity and support the client’s goals for innovation, education, and technology-driven learning.
The design reflects project drivers and CASTL’s values; education, technology, innovation, and skills advancement, through transparency, dynamic forms, and a high-contrast palette with bold accents.
Full height glazed partitions provide visibility into classrooms and labs, showcasing student activity and transforming the facility into a living showcase for BC’s growing life sciences sector and allowing visitors and students to visually engage with biomanufacturing training. Angled elements, including flooring patterns, seating niches, and glazing geometry, draw inspiration from CASTL’s hexagon logo, with branding integrated throughout the design. The overall openness, paired with dynamic angular forms and a bold, high-contrast palette, creates an inspiring environment that reflects the energy and advancement of the biomanufacturing industry in BC.
KRA served as Architect, Prime Consultant, and Interior Designer for this tenant improvement project. The Lead Designer directed the interior design, supported by our architectural team, who prepared detailed architectural drawings and documentation. The architects ensured building code compliance, developed technical design details, and led construction administration through to completion and commissioning. The architect designed key base building elements, including fire separations and the sloped angled windows, which were customized to achieve the design intent while accommodating existing steel structural bracing.
