This is a research project of translating traditional Chinese noodles making technique into potential architectural elements through drawings and computational interpretation. This project mainly focused on the egg noodles making technique which is one of the traditional noodles making methods.
This technique can be divided into five stages which includes 1) preparing and mixing the ingredients 2) kneading the dough by pinching and pulling 3) swinging and pulling the dough 4) twisting, pulling, rolling and cutting the dough 5) folding and pulling the dough. Each stages is carefully examined and presented in a digital format or 2D drawings together with simulations. The software used in this study includes manual modelling and drawings with Rhinocerous, Grasshopper, Maya, zBrush, Adobe photoshop, Adobe illustrator and digital simulation with Modo and Adobe premiere pro.
The final designs are 3D printed in brass and white frosted plastic which recorded the entire egg noodles making process. The model of the black acrylic staircase with the white frosted plastics strands eventually manifested itself as the staircase design for the Tasty flagship restaurant at Taikoo Li Chengdu.
