National Bank Place: A Sustainable Urban Landmark in the Heart of Montreal
As you approach Montreal’s business district, National Bank Place rises along Saint-Jacques Street, the heir to a financial history carved in stone. Visible from afar, the tower and its interior environment engage with the city, transforming the street into a threshold rather than a boundary. Its open base connects Saint-Jacques and Notre-Dame Streets and houses the bank branch, designed as a place to be lived in, traversed, and shared.
The building’s verticality is expressed on different scales: it structures the neighborhood, enlivens public spaces, and fosters a vertical community. Two suspended atria offer spectacular views of the city, the river, and the distant landscapes of the Montérégie region. The green roof terraces, the park, and the communal spaces extend the urban experience, bringing light, nature, and a breath of fresh air to the occupants’ daily lives.
The 40-story, 102,200 m² project addresses major technical challenges: a footprint spanning three streets at different levels, optimization of standard floor plans, vertical transportation for 6,000 people daily, and the first installation of double-compartment elevators in Quebec. Innovation is evident in the prefabricated triple-glazed curtain wall, smart multifunctional sensors, the use of hydroelectric power, and heat recovery, ensuring high performance and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Certified LEED Gold and WELL Gold, the building also incorporates active mobility: 400 bike spaces, showers and lockers, direct access to public transit networks, and an architectural staircase. As for the commissioning of the building envelope—an exemplary process for a building of this scale—it optimized thermal performance, limiting energy loss and ensuring indoor comfort.
More than just a tower, National Bank Place is an open and sustainable space where architecture, light, nature, and community life converge, anchoring the institution in the city and in time.
Program
The building can accommodate 12,000 employees assigned to the head office, with a maximum daily occupancy of approximately 6,000 people. It includes bank branch, multifunctional conference room, office space, collaborative workspaces, a gym and health center, a two-level cafeteria with a terrace, six levels of underground parking, including 400 bicycle parking spaces and 100 electric car charging stations, an outdoor garden on the 40th floor, and a daycare center that can accommodate more than 180 children.
