The project consists of expanding Armand-Corbeil High School by adding a 6,710 m2 three-story structure to accommodate all students enrolled in semi-specialized vocational training and preparatory work training at the Centre de services scolaire des Affluents. The Impact School now brings them all together under one roof, whereas they were previously scattered across several schools in the area.
The new building includes facilities for employment-focused training programs, such as cooking, sewing, carpentry, general building maintenance, and hygiene workshops. It also has 24 classrooms, a double gymnasium, an agora, an existing swimming pool converted into a sports hall, and an outdoor educational space with greenery that enhances the existing sports facilities. The extension is connected to the existing building at the level of the gymnasium and by a new circulation route along the sports hall.
Contributing to the creation of a remarkably welcoming space, the various areas are arranged around a bright central core. Upon entering, students are immersed in the heart of the school, in a vast public space composed of bleachers, which is wide open and serves as a cafeteria, a place for studying, socializing, and cultural and educational activities. This space continues into the outdoor garden, a lively, green space that encourages interaction and exchange.
In line with the new generation of schools and the principles set out by the Quebec Ministry of Education, the project supports educational success and offers users a welcoming school and a flexible, sustainable environment.
Among the measures that contribute to making the new school a warm and environmentally friendly place to live are: the use of wood in classrooms, corridors, and common areas; a clerestory window system that helps increase the amount of daylight in classrooms while improving the energy performance of the building envelope; the revitalization of a vacant lot transformed into a natural, grassy, landscaped educational garden where students and the surrounding community can socialize. It should also be noted that sustainable development measures have been implemented to make a concrete contribution to the urgent and necessary fight against climate change, including the addition of a geothermal well serving both schools, the development of a park incorporating a rainwater management system, and the choice of high-performance glass for the windows.The result is a project that offers a pleasant living environment, consisting of a variety of modular and adaptable spaces that support collaborative learning methods and the specialized vocational integration mission of the Impact School.
