Hope Plaza redefines cancer care through an architectural vision that merges advanced technology, holistic healing and a profoundly human-centered experience. Located at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, Hope Plaza was conceived as a “boulder in a stream”, where water shapes the site, flows into the building, and carves a central void through the public spaces. This concept is further expressed through a transparent north facade that frames unobstructed mountain views, while the south, east and west elevations are wrapped in chevron-patterned anodized panels. The panels form a protective environmental shell, mediating heat and light from the semi-arid climate.
Every design decision was informed by restoring hope and normalcy for patients navigating difficult journeys. The process was guided by evidence-based design principles and a deep understanding of the needs of cancer patients. This led to comprehensive daylighting and solar irradiance analyses to optimize light with patient comfort. Infusion bays and treatment areas are oriented to receive diffused daylight and provide restorative views, while strategically placed shading devices protect light-sensitive patients from direct exposure. The balance between openness and protection creates an atmosphere of calm, dignity and safety.
Biophilic design principles are woven throughout Hope Plaza’s architecture and landscape. Curved walls, inspired by the form of water-carved boulders, draw direct inspiration from the site and create a visually dynamic space. Nature-inspired artwork, water features, and a 1.6-acre park foster a multisensory connection to nature, and quiet seating zones offer moments of privacy and reflection within the clinical setting.
Hope Plaza exemplifies design excellence through patient-centered planning, environmental stewardship and long-term adaptability. Strategic orientation, climate-responsive shading and a performance-driven envelope reduce heat gain, maximize daylight and elevate the healing experience. Together, these elements create a restorative architecture that nurtures resilience for all who enter.
