The new Engineering Discovery Building (EDB) serves as a catalyst for innovation in engineering solutions that advance society, drive economic progress and improve quality of life around the world. Located on a prominent corner in the engineering precinct, the EDB creates a new gateway and link to the central UT Austin campus. This project replaces existing research and teaching space, providing a new home for geosystems and chemical engineering, while encouraging industry partnerships within the energy sector.
The five-story research tower provides space for 32 research teams, including 335 graduate students and postdocs, replete with meeting spaces organized around a connecting stair. The 2-story student-focused podium contains departmental counseling offices, teaching laboratories, technology-enabled classrooms, open work areas and public spaces for casual and formal engagement. Designed with sustainability at its core, the building features high-efficiency chilled beams for heating and cooling, low-e-glass and solar shading devices, low-carbon concrete, a green roof on the pavilion and flood risk mitigation strategies. The EDB is tracking LEED Gold.
