Constructed in 1914, Sedgwick Hall is the oldest and most historic structure on Rockhurst’s campus. CO Architects and Helix Architecture + Design re-imagined Sedgwick Hall, transforming the building into the new home for Rockhurst nursing students. The design seizes the opportunity to emphasize the original features, creating a space that fosters a connection between the students and the building’s rich history.
The transformed building provides next-generation nursing and health sciences education facilities with two 50-person active learning studios, nursing labs, a health assessment lab and home health lab, and a simulation suite. Located on the third floor, the simulation suite is arranged in a racetrack layout with four brief / debrief rooms, four high-fidelity simulated patient rooms, a centralized control room, observation rooms, and six exam rooms.
Throughout the design process, many historical features were uncovered, including tilework, paintings, concrete joists, clay tile ceilings, Gothic light fixtures, crown molding, marble stair treads and travertine panels. These features were preserved throughout, and a contemporary addition seamlessly links to the historic structure. The east side of the building features a modern design with a three-story glass facade that fills Sedgwick Hall with light and strengthens the connection to the bustling campus quad. By repurposing and preserving, Sedgwick Hall represents the future of Rockhurst University while honoring the past.
