The main concept behind the stadium was to create a playing space inspired by a children’s game—a paper Pac-Man—that stretched out, creating a faceted exterior and a vibrant interior.
The design of the Lab_Nucia office building influenced the stadium project throughout its entire design process. A building on a promontory, elevated, faceted, and with colorful interiors… But this time made of translucent polycarbonate rather than constructed as a massive reinforced concrete structure.
Thus the stadium emerged, like a game that opens up, stretches over a base that serves as a promenade, and looks outward. This reduces the typical scale of this type of structure, making it more human.
The stadium building presents itself as a new platform, a new horizon that connects with the nearby Ponoch and Captivador mountains, whose pine forests frame our distant views. The base of our new promontory is configured as a promenade for the public, reclaimed from the city. This platform reduces the scale of the stadium, and our origami rests upon it; like a child’s toy, it unfolds in red to attract the public—the red tide of La Nucia that gathers on Sundays to support their team. The translucent folds alter the building’s appearance throughout the day, until at dusk its interior structure is revealed as light emerges from the folds themselves, changing color according to its mood.
Conceptually, the stadium is designed as a translucent base that frames and divides the building’s program: the lower level is reserved for private use by players and houses the reception area, four locker rooms, press rooms, management offices, gyms, and the medical and anti-doping rooms. The upper level accommodates the spectator gallery, where visitors can move about as if strolling along a promenade. The stairwells are highlighted by the opening of the “pac-man,” already hinting at the color we will see inside.
