Project Background
CR Powered by Epiroc, a mining equipment innovator, faced operational and cultural challenges while operating from two separate Brisbane locations. This geographical fragmentation created barriers to collaborative innovation, compromised operational efficiency, and weakened the cultural connections fundamental to the company's Swedish heritage and organisational values.
The consolidation to a single facility presented a strategic opportunity to address these challenges through integrated workplace design. The project brief centered on creating a unified environment that would honor Scandinavian workplace principles—particularly the tradition of Fika, where colleagues gather to strengthen professional relationships—while supporting both productivity and cultural cohesion.
Design Strategy
The architectural approach prioritises spatial inter-connectivity to facilitate organic movement and interaction throughout the workplace. Rather than conventional compartmentalised office layouts, the design establishes flowing environments where formal business functions seamlessly transition into informal collaborative spaces.
A substantial boardroom serves as the spatial anchor, positioned adjacent to central kitchen and social areas to create an integrated hub where structured meetings naturally extend into relationship-building activities. This configuration reflects contemporary understanding of optimal team dynamics and operational effectiveness.
Flexibility governs all design decisions, with diverse meeting environments ranging from private focus pods for individual work to expansive collaborative zones supporting larger team activities. Dedicated acoustic booths ensure confidential communication while maintaining visual connectivity to the broader workspace ecosystem.
Environmental Design
The open-plan configuration maximises natural light distribution by minimising built elements along the building perimeter. This strategy creates luminous, expansive spaces with exterior views, contributing to occupant wellbeing and workplace satisfaction.
Strategically positioned vegetation and planters provide subtle spatial delineation between functional zones while introducing biophilic design elements that establish a calming, naturalistic atmosphere throughout the facility.
Operational Integration
The lower level accommodates essential operational functions including goods receiving, light assembly, and product testing, creating seamless workflow integration without disrupting primary office activities on the upper level.
Specialised facilities—including a dedicated 3D printing laboratory, robotics workspace, and professional media studio—demonstrate the design's capacity to support technical innovation alongside conventional administrative functions.
Technology Infrastructure
Integrated video-conferencing systems throughout the facility enable effective hybrid working models, supporting collaboration between on-site personnel and remote team members. The technology framework was designed for adaptability, anticipating future evolution in workplace patterns and communication requirements.
Comprehensive change management support accompanied the physical transformation, ensuring successful employee adaptation to both practical and cultural workplace transitions.
Project Outcomes
CR Powered by Epiroc now operates from a cohesive, dynamic workplace that authentically embodies their corporate culture while facilitating daily innovation. The facility functions as a collaborative platform designed for organisational evolution and growth.
The consolidation has successfully unified the workforce within a single environment where Swedish cultural heritage and contemporary business practices converge to support sustained operational excellence and innovation.
