This project is a remodel of an existing theater in the heart of Studio City, which sits along the Los Angeles River. The project came to us with dreams of space for performances and other events on the ground level, with a cutting-edge photo studio/office above. Originally built as a parking garage on the first level, the building was previously converted to a community theater. When Relativity Architects was brought in, a stepped mezzanine overwhelmed the interior of the first-floor volume, and the second floor was divided into disparate offices. With the help of our structural engineer, RA removed the oversized mezzanine and opened up the ceiling on the second floor so that it could function performativity for its needs. From the exterior, RA provided a full-face lift to the building's facade, turning utilitarian stairs into a statement piece.
