The Wistar Institute, the nation’s oldest private biomedical research institution, is expanding its facilities for cancer research and vaccine development through a new seven-story Research Tower. In addition to the design of this research building, Ballinger provided existing facility assessment, master planning and programming to determine the best solution for Wistar to expand its research operations, recruit new faculty, and pursue a collaborative workplace model to support emerging areas of science.
Five floors of the tower are dedicated to research facilities, focused on team science and multidisciplinary interactivity. The new building supports strategic plan objectives to increase principal investigator headcount and space; to transform the research environment into one of a world-class research institution that enhances collaboration, interaction, and innovation; to provide a modern infrastructure that is flexible, efficient and easily maintained; and to convey the Institute’s image and culture in the design of a new structure while respecting the tradition and context of its urban campus.
