Templeton Primary School is located in Wantirna, Victoria, an area primarily defined by single-storey brick veneer homes and small commercial establishments. Established in 1980, the school is just ten kilometres from the Dandenong Ranges National Park, offering a valuable connection to nature.
Our recent project involved the construction of a two-story specialist learning facility designed to support curriculum delivery through flexible learning spaces. The facility includes a dedicated art room, maker spaces, and common zones that foster collaboration and creativity.
Three key design drivers were identified through consultation: Connection to Nature, Aspirational Learning, and Local Character. Connection to Nature emphasises strong links between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing visual and physical connections to the landscape. Aspirational Learning aligns with the school’s educational goals, fostering curiosity and inquiry through engaging environments. Local Character highlights the school's civic identity within its suburban context, shaping a distinct educational presence through thoughtful public architecture.
On the campus-facing side, the facility is designed with a domestic scale, creating an open and welcoming environment for 5–11-year-old students. Glazed classrooms open directly onto the play fields, while a grand staircase allows for efficient movement between levels, fostering a dynamic learning experience.
The building's main street interface features a textured block façade that subtly folds in plan, incorporating strategically placed windows that provide glimpses into school life while maintaining privacy. A terraced amphitheatre open to the street has been introduced as a shared community space, inviting students and parents to gather and socialize at the start and end of the school day. This thoughtful addition challenges the typical suburban landscape of fenced residential lots, encouraging inclusivity and community engagement. The building connects not only with its immediate context but also with the larger easter suburbs area, including views to the Dandenong ranges in the distance.
