Located at the intersection of SoHo, Chinatown, and Little Italy with lively urban street & rooftop views, this project combined two apartments into one generous loft for a growing family. The base building was a former factory converted into apartments in 2001. The key to this renovation was working within the building’s existing infrastructure to design a large, central chef’s kitchen with views of Little Italy’s historic Police Building’s patinaed copper dome. Doing so required a central corridor that doubles as a gallery to connect the lofty, public living room to the private bedrooms and study/play area.
A goal of the project was to provide plenty of storage space for the day-to-day essentials for the family while allowing the space to feel open and uncluttered, which meant ample storage closets and pantries. We worked with kitchen designer Molteni&C | Dada Engineered to create a modern, clean kitchen that could be either closed and intimate for the family or open up to the custom bar and grand living room space for larger gatherings. This is achieved with a custom 12-ft wide, 8-ft tall glass and blackened steel partition wall that picks up the geometry of the Police Building and allows for multiple configurations. The primary bathroom enjoys large stone slab walls and a generous walk-in shower with Cocoon plumbing fixtures, while the secondary bathrooms use Porcelanosa slab and tile, complimented by Graff plumbing fixtures. Many other custom touches help make this apartment truly special.
