Rancho at Nomadic Hotel

In Guiones, LOOP Design Studio designed and delivered construction documents for the rancho at Nomadic Hotel — an open-air structure built to hold many lives at once. By day it's a space for surf theory and quiet study; it shifts easily into a sanctuary for yoga retreats, then opens again for gathering and play.
The design responds directly to its coastal, tropical setting. A rancho typology was chosen deliberately: steep thatched or palm-influenced roofline for shedding heavy rain, deep overhangs for shade, and an open, breathable plan that lets onshore breezes move through instead of relying on mechanical cooling. Locally sourced materials and vernacular building methods keep the structure rooted in Costa Rican craft traditions while minimizing embodied energy and environmental impact.
Rather than imposing a fixed program, the rancho was conceived as adaptable infrastructure — a single volume flexible enough to support a hotel's changing daily rhythms without added construction. It's architecture that stays quiet so the landscape, and the people gathered under it, can lead.
