Nestled in the lush landscapes of Nosara’s hillside, Costa Rica, the Maloca is a multi-functional space designed for yoga, meditation, and ceremonial gatherings. This unique bamboo structure, designed by IBUKU in collaboration with LOOP Design Studio as the local architect of record, embodies a seamless integration of traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge bamboo engineering, resulting in a design that is both structurally innovative and deeply rooted in local building traditions.
At the heart of this project lies a commitment to sustainability. Bamboo is not only the primary structural component but also a symbol of resilience and ecological harmony. The construction process emphasizes low-impact techniques such as earthen walls and floors, wood-shingle roof, ensuring minimal disturbance to the surrounding environment while maximizing durability and natural beauty.
The Maloca is envisioned as an organic extension of the landscape, standing in perfect symbiosis with the natural world and the human body. Its open, adaptable floor plan allows for dynamic spatial transformations—accommodating intimate gatherings of ten as effortlessly as vibrant ecstatic dance sessions with a hundred participants. Thoughtfully positioned openings and architectural elements interact with views showcasing the natural beauty of the surrounding throughout the day, creating an ever-evolving interior atmosphere that mirrors the rhythms of nature's light.
