In the coastal landscape of Mui Ne, Phan Thiet—renowned for its sweeping terracotta sand dunes and tropical ocean breezes—the extension of Pandora Sand Hill Resort presents a delicate dialogue between existing hospitality infrastructure and sculptural, climate-responsive architecture. Tasked with introducing a new vertical boutique hotel block containing 13 suites, a ground-floor ballroom, and a panoramic rooftop cafe, H2 Architects sought to transcend conventional resort expansions by creating a building that functions as a living, breathing landmark.
The project site posed a classic spatial challenge: integrating a multi-story modern insertion into an established, low-rise resort environment without disrupting the serene scale or native landscape. Rather than erecting a rigid, monolithic block, the design draws direct inspiration from the fluid geometry of Mui Ne’s iconic wind-sculpted sand dunes.
The building’s facade is characterized by continuous, organic concrete waves that wrap around each floor level. These deep-cantilevered balconies serve dual purposes: aesthetically, they echo the soft lines of the surrounding landscape; functionally, they act as massive passive shading devices that block harsh tropical solar radiation while channeling refreshing coastal winds directly into the guest rooms.
At the ground level, monumental arched openings framed in warm earth-toned plaster welcome guests into a fluid transition zone. The ground floor houses a transparent, glass-enclosed ballroom and executive meeting space, blurring the boundary between indoor luxury and the lush tropical garden outside. Above, the residential levels feature 13 meticulously oriented guest rooms, each extended by a private terrace enveloped in dense native greenery. The cascading planters integrated into the balcony edges form a vertical microclimate, filtering air, reducing radiant heat, and affording guests absolute privacy alongside uninhibited views of the resort grounds.
Color and material selection played a pivotal role in grounding the structure in its context. The warm terracotta and muted clay hues of the main structure pay homage to the local red sand dunes, while raw concrete textures and floor-to-ceiling glazing create a contemporary contrast. As night falls, integrated warm LED accent strips highlight the sweeping curves and volumetric arches, transforming the building into a glowing beacon within the resort compound.
Crowning the structure is an open-air rooftop cafe and lounge, shaded by lush tropical foliage and offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding coastal horizon. By elevating the social spaces to the sky, the design maximizes land efficiency while delivering an unforgettable experiential sequence for resort visitors.
The Pandora Sand Hill Hotel Extension exemplifies H2 Architects' core philosophy: a harmonious blend of biophilic design, vernacular context, and contemporary structural geometry. By reimagining a resort addition as a seamless fusion of sculptural form and environmental adaptation, the project sets a new benchmark for sustainable tropical hospitality architecture in Vietnam.
