Project : Gia Nghĩa School – A Symphony of Earth and Light in the Central Highlands
Location: Gia Nghia City, Dak Nong Province, Vietnam

Nestled among the misty coffee hills and rolling red basalt terrain of Dak Nong, Gia Nghia Primary School emerges as a gentle, fluid curve seamlessly integrated into the landscape. The project stems from a vision to create a humane educational sanctuary where architecture does not dominate nature, but acts as a bridge connecting indigenous children to knowledge and the universe.
Inspired by the raw simplicity of Central Highland villages, the structure utilizes thick rammed-earth walls combined with locally sourced natural stone. These organically curved earthen walls not only mirror the natural contours of Dak Nong's hills but also serve as an exceptional thermal mass—keeping classrooms cool during scorching afternoon heat and warm during chilly, foggy nights.
Designed to captivate a child’s senses and wonder, the heart of the school features a central circular courtyard sheltered by a sweeping protective roof canopy. Through a dramatic central oculus, beams of sunlight pierce through the shadows like golden ribbons, illuminating a vibrant, undulating woven play net below. Here, children’s laughter blends with natural light, transforming recess into a vivid journey of sensory discovery.
Classroom and library interiors are crafted with warm timber tones and minimalist built-in furniture, offering unobstructed views of tropical courtyards and distant mountain slopes. Soft natural daylight filters through curved openings, establishing a tranquil environment that nurtures imagination and learning.
Gia Nghia School stands as more than a sustainable architectural venture; it is a visual poem celebrating the harmony of humanity, mother earth, and ethereal light—nurturing young minds in the heart of the highlands.
