A wall painting with chairs - this project was developed as an adaptable tool kit serving new public programming and special events at the Oakland Museum of California. Sited in the heart of downtown Oakland, the museum's public terraced-concrete entry plaza creates an outdoor living room for the community with simple metal garden chairs hung from hooks similar to a Shaker house. Initially projecting a strong graphic impression, the composition comes into three-dimensional relief and expresses itself as an interactive participatory piece where staff and visitors can create multiple seating arrangements in response to different public programs, events, and everyday interactions. The installation features furniture, storage, and a large-scale drawing surface that invites the public to gather, rest, reflect, and create. The black and white color palette was chosen for its graphic statement as well as its ability to serve as a canvas for an ever-changing human installation.
