In December of 2010, the Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child in Summit, entertained the idea of adding a new Performing Arts component in the form of a Black Box Theatre to its campus. Along with the Black Box Theatre, we were asked to incorporate a Campus Chapel into the design. We were directed to focus our design on a narrow parcel of land situated between two existing buildings, Bonaventura and Connelly Halls. The “Target Site” with significant grade variation posed a significant challenge since an improperly placed building could create a “wall” and “close-off” the visual and physical connection to the rest of campus.
Understanding the surrounding facilities and their makeup is critical in ensuring that the final building design fits contextually within its surroundings. Building type for example, whether the space is a Gymnasium, Classroom, Chapel/Theater are significant factors in determining how much or how little the building’s architecture should compete for attention in the campus setting, while remaining a member of the campus family. The existing architectural characteristics and building types will help develop the appropriate vocabulary and significance of the proposed new building.
Based upon analysis of the existing site and the given information, our knowledge of the existing facilities, and the existing Architecture, The Solutions Team began to analyze the projected building within a new “target site”. By attempting to overlay building footprints at the suggested location, it became evident that despite attempting to create a linear connection between the Lower and Upper Schools; a new building in this location could potentially create a “wall” and “close off” the visual and physical connection to Grace Hall. Instead, by creating an enclosed corridor along the southeast side of Connelly Hall, we create a visual and physical connection to the building and campus. By maintaining a proximity to the target site but sliding the proposed building toward Tisdall Hall, along the outside wall of the Dining hall at Connelly Hall, we eliminate the chance of closing off the site and provide additional benefits including the creation of a connector and safe courtyard.
A new drop of and pick up area eliminates a long time concern of driving behind the school in the play area and provides a covered structure to serve the new Theater and Chapel Lobby as well as Bonaventura Hall. An entry point at the northeast end serves students coming from Grace Hall and another entry point opposite Bonaventura Hall and Connelly ties directly from the Dining Hall and the floor above. A vertical Architectural element at the northeast end punctuates the “corridor” or New Student Gallery / Commons Area. Eliminating the paved area between Connelly and Bonaventura Halls makes room for a “student green” and potential play areas that can also serve the Theatre and Chapel.
