Tasked with creating inviting new spaces with limited resources, Sage and Coombe designed an array of individual reading and activity areas defined by oversized lampshades. Each shade provides downlight to the individual work area below while simultaneously up-lighting the room as a whole.
Each shade features images of neighborhood sites and residents, including nearby streets, the Hudson River, and major league baseball players, sourced from the archives of the New York Public Library. The exterior of each shade depicts these local icons in black-and-white silhouettes while the interiors illustrate them in full color.
