Mayapada Eye Center: Soft Futurism as a Human-Centred Healthcare Environment in Jakarta
Designed by INSADA Integrated Design Team, the Mayapada Eye Center introduces a new identity for specialist healthcare interiors in Indonesia, balancing advanced medical technology with a calming and human-centred spatial experience.
Located within Mayapada Hospital Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta, the 500-square-metre facility serves as the flagship eye centre for Mayapada Hospital, providing comprehensive ophthalmology services including consultation rooms, diagnostic facilities, LASIK, and SMILE surgical theatres. The project establishes a design blueprint for future Mayapada Eye Center locations while redefining the relationship between healthcare, technology, and patient wellbeing.
Soft Futurism: Bridging Technology and Human Experience
The design concept, developed by INSADA as Soft Futurism, explores how futuristic healthcare environments can remain approachable, warm, and emotionally supportive. Rather than adopting a purely clinical aesthetic, the interior combines advanced medical functionality with organic forms, tactile materials, and a refined hospitality-inspired atmosphere.
The design language is characterised by sweeping curves, fluid transitions, and softened geometries that guide users naturally through the space. These architectural gestures create a sense of continuity while reducing the visual rigidity commonly associated with medical environments.
By integrating technology seamlessly into the interior architecture, the project communicates innovation without creating a sense of intimidation. Medical equipment and operational requirements become part of a cohesive spatial experience designed around patient confidence and comfort.
Designing for Patient Journey and Wellbeing
A key focus of the project was understanding the emotional journey of patients visiting a specialised eye care facility. Procedures such as LASIK and other vision correction treatments often involve uncertainty, making the environment an important factor in reducing anxiety and building trust.
INSADA organised the facility around two primary zones: consultation and diagnostic areas, and surgical procedure areas. This clear spatial organisation improves operational efficiency while allowing each area to respond to different user needs.
Consultation spaces are designed as calm and welcoming environments where patients can comfortably discuss treatment options with medical professionals. Meanwhile, the surgical zone prioritises precision, efficiency, and seamless integration of advanced ophthalmic technology.
Throughout the interior, warm neutral tones, carefully controlled lighting, and comfortable furnishings create an atmosphere closer to a premium hospitality environment than a conventional medical facility.
A New Approach to Healthcare Waiting Spaces
The project reflects a broader transformation in healthcare interior design, where patient experience has become as important as clinical performance.
Moving away from traditional hospital waiting rooms with repetitive rows of seating, Mayapada Eye Center introduces lounge-style waiting areas that provide greater flexibility, privacy, and comfort. Seating arrangements encourage a more relaxed experience for patients and families while supporting better circulation and spatial clarity.
This hospitality-inspired approach creates a more welcoming environment, transforming waiting time from a passive experience into a moment of comfort and reassurance.
Operation Gallery Lounge: Connecting People with Medical Innovation
One of the defining features of Mayapada Eye Center is the operation gallery lounge, an area designed to allow family members to observe surgical procedures in a comfortable setting.
The gallery creates a unique connection between medical technology and patient support by providing transparency into the surgical process while maintaining appropriate medical standards and privacy.
Positioned with clear visual access toward the operating theatres, the lounge incorporates comfortable seating, soft lighting, and a carefully considered spatial arrangement. The design allows advanced surgical technology to become an element of trust and reassurance rather than a barrier between patients and healthcare providers.
Establishing a Future Healthcare Design Language
Beyond serving as a specialist eye care facility, Mayapada Eye Center represents a new direction for healthcare interiors in Indonesia—one that combines medical excellence with emotional wellbeing.
Through the Soft Futurism approach, INSADA created an environment where technology, architecture, and human experience exist in balance. The project demonstrates how healthcare spaces can evolve beyond functionality to become environments that support comfort, confidence, and healing.
Mayapada Eye Center serves as a prototype for future specialist healthcare facilities, showcasing how thoughtful interior architecture can transform complex medical environments into spaces that feel intuitive, welcoming, and deeply human.
