Macom Technology Solutions, a leading developer and producer of radio, microwave and millimeter wave semiconductor devices and components, chose SGA to design its new two-story headquarters. A multi-story “link” connects the new space to the existing building and additional site improvements work cohesively to create an active, unique campus setting in Lowell, MA. The headquarters includes open office, kitchen and corporate cafeteria, training and conference center, “all hands” meeting space and other building amenity zones.
To guide the process, SGA conducted comprehensive programming + envisioning interviews which informed the design decisions. Both the exterior and interior building materials were inspired by the industrial buildings that once populated the city, and SGA’s branded environments team created custom installations translating MACOM’s proprietary “wafer” into dramatic art pieces.
The double high lobby features custom semiconductor inspired graphics that visually merge with “Mill City” maps and a curated timeline exhibit which can be seen through the glass as pedestrians walk by. A two story cafe wall boasts a three dimensional sine wave built out of over 400 metal wafer replicas that ungulate up the wall to a balcony area. Overall the space not only celebrates the history of the innovative company, but it pays homage to the city of Lowell.
