This beach club sits on a site that has been popular with its members for nearly 150 years. We designed this fourth generation of the club to replace a 1960’s-era clubhouse that is no longer able to weather the storms.
The expansive site spanning from ocean to bay offered a large area for the 18,000 square foot program encompassing check-in, a large open dining and lounge deck overlooking the ocean, covered restaurant, party rooms, and bathing cabanas. Elevated above the dunes on pilings, the building addresses complicated federal FEMA regulations as well as local non-conforming use restrictions.
As a “good neighbor,” the design and style of the club — thought of as an Acropolis on the Dunes – reflects the local Shingle Style aesthetic.
The light touch on the land extends from the building pilings across an elevated walk to the beach. Open gravel park and drives keep the bulk of this site permeable. An intentionally small electrical and mechanical program reduces the footprint of this building even more and positions it for the next century.
