On a side street in the village of Southampton, this new house continues the grand tradition of elegantly designed and detailed Arts and Crafts houses by McKim, Mead & White. A multitude of details and materials enhances the balanced, asymmetrical geometric design. The twin matching gables on the front create a playful arrangement with the windows and panel layouts, shifting back and forth within the organized structure.
Grand features, such as the massive thermal window in the double-height great room, contrast with the delicately detailed columns and the cornice’s modillions. The enveloping porches appear to be carved out of the building’s shingled mass. The narrow L-shaped layout offers a strong, straightforward organization of the rooms while allowing sunlight to enter all spaces.
The classical whimsy of the Shingle Style is evident in the interior, showcasing paneling, arches, sweeping balusters, skylights, and overlooks that frame views of both the inside and outside. The pool house pavilion extends the house’s central axis into the landscape, providing a balanced counterpoint on this deep lot in the heart of the village. The decoration by Stewart Manger Interior Design completes the overall aesthetic.
