Drawing inspiration from the geometries, simplicity, and openness of the late Usonian houses of Frank Lloyd Wright, this house straddles the border between forest and field on a gently sloping mountain. Three “forest camp buildings” sit loosely parallel, with the middle one cranked to take advantage of long views across the valley. Gently sloping roofs mimic the mountains while their deep eaves provide dappled shadows on the large windows. The dark siding and green trim blend with summer and autumn foliage. On the interior, the giant fireplace and chimney of the great room anchor the house along the tree line. Large windows on all four sides open to views across the valley, the forest garden, and the sky. The dining room peninsula juts into the field, providing commanding views all around. Bedrooms are in the cabins at each end.
