School complex comprising a fundamental school with 18 classrooms, a childcare facility (SEA), a sports hall with 3 courts, a production kitchen serving 600 meals, an underground car park with 50 spaces, and an outdoor car park.
This new school building illustrates BFF...'s expertise in the design of large, multifunctional educational facilities. As a specialist in large-scale school buildings, BFF… masters the complexity inherent to this type of programme: diversity of functions, overlapping uses, evolving pedagogical requirements, and compliance with numerous regulatory frameworks.
Located on the edge of the Krakelshaff park and opening onto nature, the Ëm de Bëchel school is fully in line with a sustainable, human-centred architectural approach. The positioning of the volumes to the north of the site allows the buildings and playgrounds to open widely onto the park, while protecting the neighbouring residential area from the noise generated by children's activities.
This attention to the natural context is also reflected in a design that respects the existing vegetation and the biotope located to the east of the site. The project thus incorporates the theme of water and nature into its architectural identity, as well as into the choice of healthy and responsible materials.
In keeping with this approach, the building responds comprehensively to climate and environmental challenges. The façades were designed according to their orientation, based on summer overheating simulations, in order to integrate solar protection only where it is needed.
Water management and biodiversity also occupy an essential place. Green roofs contribute to local biodiversity, rainwater retention, and thermal comfort. They are complemented by retention basins integrated into the playgrounds, permeable outdoor surfaces, and a rainwater harvesting tank, ensuring responsible management of water resources.
Finally, the planting scheme, composed of native species that are resilient to climate change, reinforces the presence of nature on the site and actively supports local biodiversity.
Building on this overarching environmental approach, the structural design was conceived with the same commitment to restraint and performance. The structure aims to reduce the building's carbon footprint through the combination of timber, exposed concrete, and activated slabs, which create a lighter frame, stripped of unnecessary finishes, while offering natural and lasting thermal comfort. The 1.25 m constructive grid, applied consistently to both the façade and the interior, ensures great flexibility of use. It allows for easily reconfigurable partitions and accessible, demountable technical installations, thereby limiting waste during future transformations and extending the building's lifespan.
At the same time, the semi-decentralised ventilation system, with units distributed by wing and by floor, reduces the length of technical networks, lowers the required height for technical ceilings, and improves overall energy efficiency.
In addition, the project combines geothermal energy, heat pumps, and photovoltaic production, supplemented by a backup gas boiler to guarantee performance continuity in all seasons.
To further enhance these performances in service of the users, and in accordance with the "pädagogisches Raumfunktionsbuch" provided by the municipality during the competition, the project was designed from the inside out, so as to give meaning to the spatial organisation and place users' needs at the heart of the design process.
The school cycles are organised in clusters: six classrooms, differentiation rooms, and the "maison relais" (after-school childcare) are arranged around a flexible central zone, conducive to synergies, interaction, and collaborative work.
This organisation continues at the heart of the complex, where the central foyer, the thematic workshops — science, media, creativity — and the library form stimulating and calming spaces, directly connected to the landscape.
Thematic workshops — media and film, science, creative activities — together with a library, complete the educational offering and reflect an innovative and inclusive approach to learning, with wheelchair access guaranteed across the entire site, in compliance with ADAPTH standards.
Thanks to these choices, the decisions made from the earliest design stages have resulted in a building that is energy-efficient, environmentally conscious, and supportive of users' health and comfort, while remaining economically optimised throughout its life cycle. This holistic approach, combining environmental performance, sustainability, and quality of use, gives the project a strong identity and allows it to fully meet the requirements for achieving DGNB Gold certification.
