In 2022, Topos was awarded the commission for the new IKC De Brink in Zwijndrecht. IKC De Brink adopts an 'active school' design philosophy, where the architecture actively promotes physical movement as an essential part of the child's development. The project comprises a combination of selective demolition, new construction, and renovation, centered around the preservation of the existing daycare center and its distinctive fan-shaped structure. By adding 13 classrooms and two after-school care (BSO) spaces, the design creates an Integrated Children's Center (IKC) catering to children aged 0 to 13.
Spatial Organization and Connectivity
The program is organized around a central heart, featuring a grandstand staircase and a dedicated movement area. This core serves as a communal hub, fostering social interaction and supporting multi-functional use.
The architectural language harmonizes with the existing structure through a refined evolution of its geometric planes. Unified under a single roofline, the complex gains a sense of cohesion and visual identity. Despite its scale, the various functions remain clearly legible, maintaining a human-centric scale throughout.
Key Features and Sustainability
The design prioritizes well-being and flexibility through several signature elements:
Active Design: An environment tailored to encourage movement and play.
The Jetty: A distinctive outdoor deck adjacent to the staff room that doubles as an outdoor classroom.
Green Roof Gardens: These elevated landscapes provide essential outdoor space while enhancing the building’s sustainability and nature-inclusivity.
Furthermore, the roof gardens are structurally prepared for potential future expansion, ensuring the building remains a flexible, future-proof asset for the community.
