Our engagement began early, working closely with national law firm Gilchrist Connell and their tenant representative to evaluate future workplace opportunities in Melbourne. This process led to the selection of 530 Collins Street, a tenancy with quality, location and presence that aligned with the firm’s long-term ambitions. Having delivered multiple projects within the building, we brought an established understanding of both the asset and its stakeholders.
The brief centred on creating a workplace that reflects the professionalism and clarity of the Gilchrist Connell brand, while supporting the practical demands of a growing legal team. The ambition was to balance a strong client-facing presence with a highly functional and considered working environment.
The project also marked a significant milestone for the firm, forming the first stage of a broader national workplace rollout. As part of this process, a set of design principles and guidelines was established to inform future office fitouts across Australia.
Solution
The office interior design establishes a workplace that is both elevated and grounded, balancing the formality of a commercial law practice with a sense of warmth and approachability.
Drawing from the base building, the material palette extends the language of the 530 Collins Street lobby into the tenancy, creating a cohesive and continuous arrival experience. Earthy tones, refined detailing and layered materiality are expressed through timber, fluted glass and subtle brass accents, resulting in a restrained and confident interior.
This language is carried throughout the workplace, supporting a seamless transition between client-facing and internal environments. The front-of-house unfolds into a series of interconnected spaces where reception, meeting and breakout areas operate as a unified whole rather than discrete zones. Integrated timber seating and planting introduce softness and informality, while meeting rooms are designed with openness and strong acoustic performance in mind.
Beyond these areas, the workplace shifts to a quieter, more focused environment. Open workspaces are organised to maximise natural light and visual clarity, with integrated greenery and clean lines supporting concentration. Perimeter offices and enclosed rooms provide spaces for focused work, while subtle variations in materiality, lighting and form guide movement and delineate zones without reliance on rigid boundaries.
The result is a balanced environment that reconciles the structure of the legal profession with a contemporary, human-centred approach.
Benefit
The completed workplace delivers a sophisticated and highly functional environment that supports both client engagement and day-to-day performance.
A strong front-of-house creates an immediate and lasting impression, while flexible spaces accommodate a range of uses, from formal meetings and mediations to larger internal gatherings. This is complemented by a workplace designed for focus, with a high provision of quiet rooms, acoustically considered spaces and well-integrated workstations.
The planning supports multiple modes of working, enabling both collaboration and concentration within a cohesive framework, resulting in a workplace that is practical, comfortable and responsive to the needs of its users.
The success of the Melbourne office fit out project has reinforced the client relationship, leading to further commissions and the ongoing delivery of offices in Perth and Brisbane as part of a national rollout.
