Donlacha Bridge House

Donlacha Bridge House is a renovation of two 20-year-old, two-storey houses into one unified home for a growing family requiring more living space for the future.
As the existing house was where the owner grew up, the place carries many memories and emotional values. Instead of demolishing and rebuilding, the design approach focuses on preserving the existing structure while adapting it to support a new way of living.
The main concept began by transforming the unused setback space between the two houses into a new connecting element.
This new intervention was designed as a “bridge” that connects not only circulation but also the architectural language of both houses, allowing two separate buildings to become one cohesive home.
The new connecting space integrates a small internal courtyard, creating a vertical space where greenery can be experienced while moving across the bridge on both the first and second floors. The courtyard also becomes a natural view for bedrooms on both sides of the house.
With limited views from the surrounding context, the house creates its own internal scenery through void, natural light, and greenery.
Inside the house, existing limitations such as low structural beams were carefully resolved through built-in elements that become part of the architecture, helping create a cleaner and more continuous spatial experience.
Warm materials and natural wood flooring throughout both floors were selected to maintain the feeling of home.
Originally, the two houses had separate staircases. The design keeps only one main staircase, while the removed stair area is transformed into an open space, bringing more openness and spatial quality into the interior.
Donlacha Bridge House is not only about connecting two buildings together, but also about bridging memories from the past with a new chapter of family life.
