This project is a renovation of a 34-year-old shophouse, reimagined as the office of S+S Architects.
The design begins by embracing the project’s primary constraint — transforming it into the core driver of the architectural approach.
The most defining limitation, which ultimately inspired the project’s name, is the narrow width of just 3.30 meters.
In its original condition, the building measured only 3.30 meters in width, with certain areas having a floor-to-beam height of less than 2.00 meters, resulting in a compressed and uncomfortable spatial experience from the moment of entry.
Over time, full extensions had enclosed the entire footprint, allowing natural light and ventilation to enter only from the front façade. As a result, the interior remained dark, stagnant, and poorly ventilated.
The design approach therefore began with subtraction rather than addition.
Parts of the mezzanine floor were removed, reducing the massing from four levels to approximately three and a half levels. This intervention created a vertical void, allowing natural light and airflow to re-enter the building, and enabling the space to “breathe” once again.
Rather than directly resolving the narrowness, the strategy focuses on redirecting perception toward the quality of space.
The design prioritizes spatial experience over physical dimensions, employing architectural techniques to shift attention away from existing constraints.
Linear and vertical elements are introduced to visually extend the space, while a continuous visual axis draws the eye toward the rear of the building.
A small rear garden is positioned as the primary focal point upon entry.
From the moment one steps inside, the view is directed toward a large tree and a pocket of greenery, guiding the eye toward openness and nature, rather than the limitations of the narrow interior.
Another key intervention is the introduction of a double-volume space connecting the ground floor to the mezzanine. This vertical continuity enhances the perception of height and openness, making the space feel larger than its actual dimensions and significantly reducing the sense of confinement.
With a width of only 3.30 meters, every decision had to be carefully considered — from circulation and functional layout to the efficient use of every part of the space. Each element was designed with intention to ensure clarity, usability, and spatial comfort.
Material selection remains simple and restrained, with natural tones and soft contrasts to create a calm and cohesive atmosphere. Daylight, drawn in through the void and rear garden, reinforces the spatial quality and allows the interior to shift subtly throughout the day.
The intention is for occupants to feel comfortable within the space, rather than to be constantly aware of its limitations.
Ultimately, the result is not just an office, but a space that reflects the design thinking of the practice itself — a place we choose to inhabit every day.
