Bumusa Residential Complex Design Narrative
This project explores "dwelling" on two levels: the individual house and the residential complex. A house comprises essential spaces that, when arranged thoughtfully, create a foundation for daily life. At a larger scale, housing units form a cohesive community, fostering social interactions within the complex and with the city of Bumusa.
Key Design Considerations
1. Establishing the complex as a prominent urban landmark.
2. Enhancing the experience of pedestrians and passersby.
3. Improving the quality of life for residents.
Design Approach
Located along the Persian Gulf, the project integrates national identity with contemporary Iranian architecture. Housing units act as modular "pixels," forming a central courtyard that enhances community interaction. Semi-open terraces and courtyards encourage social engagement, while optimal orientation ensures natural ventilation and energy efficiency.
Inspired by traditional southern Iranian architecture, elements like central courtyards, iwans, and kapars are reinterpreted for modern living. Simple, cost-effective construction methods enhance feasibility, while materials reflect the natural colors of Bumusa’s soil, reinforcing a local identity.
Community interaction is encouraged through shared spaces, staircases, and bridges, turning circulation areas into social hubs. The rooftop serves as a scenic communal platform, while amenities such as bike paths, pedestrian walkways, play areas, a library, and coworking spaces enrich daily life.
Final Considerations
The complex features four plan typologies with varied semi-open spaces to enhance spatial diversity and optimize construction efficiency. Public-facing facilities like a mosque, café, and restaurant balance resident privacy with urban engagement, creating a seamless link between social life and everyday needs.
We shape architecture, and in turn, architecture shapes our lives. It is not merely a reflection of culture and time but an active force in shaping them.
