B[LUE]OX AND ISLANDS

This project involves the transformation of a narrow, through-space former office into a flexible apartment, located within a modernist building in central Larissa.Facing the city’s main square and inspired by the “Box and Islands” design concept, the layout takes advantage of the space’s linear shape, organizing it into zones for living, sleeping, cooking, working, and storage. The modular layout and consistent material palette come together to create a clean, unified and livable interior. The design is inspired by Japanese minimalism, focusing on simplicity, functionality, and spatial clarity.
Every feature in the apartment has more than one purpose. The sofa includes hidden drawers for storage, the kitchen island doubles as a dining table, and a folding desk with shelving makes smart use of vertical space, adapting to daily needs. A “box in a box” approach is used to form a private sleeping area while still allowing light and air to flow through. Lighting, both natural and artificial, is layered and carefully considered, from ceiling track lights and the large front window to subtle shelf lighting that brings depth and warmth to the space.
The color palette balances cool and warm tones. Soft blue-gray cabinets contrast with the natural texture of marine plywood. The matte laminate surfaces offer durability with a refined finish. White walls and floors help reflect light and brighten the space, while a warm-colored accent wall behind the sofa adds a gentle, cozy contrast. In the bathroom, light terracotta tiles add to the balance between warm and cool elements, creating a comfortable, inviting atmosphere.
