The Legend of the Amber Palace in Contemporary Architecture
The architectural concept of the art gallery interprets the legend of Jūratė and Kastytis, conveying the drama of their love and the wrath of Perkūnas through a contemporary architectural form. The building’s composition symbolizes the moment when Perkūnas’s lightning pierces Jūratė’s Amber Palace; the volumes shatter, fragment, and scatter across the surrounding area like pieces of amber found on the seashore.
Jūratė, Kastytis, and Perkūnas: A Legend in Volumes
The building is formed by three main volumes – the Jūratė, Kastytis, and Perkūnas sections – connected by a central shared vestibule space. Each volume is interpreted individually, taking into account the significance and character of the legendary figures. Perkūnas’s volume – the largest, most monumental, and with the most austere architectural expression – symbolizes strength, punishment, and inevitable fate. Jūratė’s tower is designed to be lighter and more delicate, evocatively linked to the fragility of amber, light, and feminine gentleness. Kastytis’s tower – the smallest and most fragile – reflects his human nature and his role as a simple fisherman in the legend.
The Architecture of Shattered Amber
The facades are jagged, irregular, and unpredictable, reminiscent of the geometry of shattered amber. The recesses in the vestibule and connecting spaces symbolically interpret the emotional drama between the characters of the legend and the areas of the Amber Palace most severely affected by the lightning strike. These architectural solutions not only shape the building’s artistic expression but also naturally highlight the main entrances, inviting visitors to experience a synthesis of art, Palanga’s identity, and the legend.
