Ballistic Architecture Machine (BAM) is a transdisciplinary design office creating award-winning landscapes and architecture since 2007. With a lengthy project sheet originating in groundbreaking public installations, BAM has evolved into a distinctive design leader with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
BAM believes that landscapes, as opposed to buildings, should be foregrounded as the icons of our cities. This reversal of the traditional design hierarchy enables us to address the environmental and social challenges of our century. Rooted in the understanding of landscape as a constructed cultural medium, BAM’s work transforms the confluence of urban spaces, boundaries, and peripheries into sustainable and celebrated spaces.
BAM’s portfolio of over 150 projects challenges conventional definitions of Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Architecture. Each project is a unique journey that challenges norms and contributes to the perpetual debate surrounding landscape aesthetics, culture, and the environment. Across highly diverse project types, BAM follows a thread exploring the relationship between humans and the biosphere which is encapsulated in the mantra ‘Nature is an Idea.’
BAM is widely recognized for its contributions to the design fields, including the Asia Pacific Design Council Design Studio of the Year (2023) and a Kyoto Design Award Top 100 Global Design Firm (2023). Individually BAM’s projects have won over 50 international awards including Grand Prix du Design Landscape of the Year (2023-2024), Muse Award, MIPIM Award (2018), A’ Award (2023), Dezeen Award (2022), and the Architizer A+ Awards (2021-2024).
