Based in Portland, Oregon, Stumptown Woods took its name from the city’s nickname that was given in 1847. During a period of phenomenal growth for Portland, the locals had to make new roads by clearing heavily forested areas of trees and did not have the resources to remove the stumps, so they left them in place. The stumps eventually became a solution instead of a nuisance, when locals realized they could whitewash the stumps and use them as convenient stepping “stones” (woods) to avoid mud and other unhip things. We acknowledge that people spend 90% of their time indoors and Stumptown Woods was created through recognizing the rapid growth and importance of the built environment. We wanted to be the solution for problems that architects and designers face. In doing so, we help them create the buildings that are distinctive, hip, convenient and innovative, and of course void of any mud and with plenty of wood.

CP Parquet also received approval by the German Institute for Building Technology DIBT, Berlin, due to its observance of stringent restrictions for emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC). For the second consecutive year it was selected by Best Up to represent one of the best examples of virtuous, sustainable design at the FuoriSalone of the Milan Furniture Fair.
All of our products labeled Antique wood or Reclaimed wood have served in a previous use, usually from an old structure such as a barn or warehouse that has reached the end of its usuable life. All of these woods qualify as materials reuse for LEED Certification. While knowing that you are contributing to the sustainability of our forest resources is cool, the connection to our past is even more cool. Most of the wood can be traced to a general sources such as the Tobacco Oak originating from tobacco drying barns in Kentucky. Other times we can trace the source back a very specific structure that include: Spiegel Catalog Warehouse, Heinz, Buster Brown Shoe Factory, Dan River Mill and the list goes on. Even if the source is not so romantic you know that re-using such a basic resource is not only the environmentally friendly thing to do, but it is also the design friendly thing to do as our wide range of Antique wood and Reclaimed wood can become the "wow factor" in any design. The options include Antique Timbers, Barn Siding, Hand Hewn Timbers, Antique Wood Paneling, and of course, Antique Wood Flooring. Recently we had the opportunity to donate wood to the wonderful show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. They built 7 homes in 7 days for families affected by the devistating tornado. We originally send our Reclaimed Cedar Weathered for the cabin themed home, but when the wood arrived the designers knew it would be of better use in the beech themed home. They were able to recreate an old beech front wood fence and board walk. We love what they did with this wood and wonder what creative uses you could think of for this or any of our wood products.
Old Wood hopes our model will build well equipped, trained local capacity to the end of creating global markets for scientifically, socially and ecologically planned micro-forest industries. Our goal is to enable the ‘locals’, to manage their own mountains and landscapes and help them realize profit and benefit so they won’t have to ‘eat the elephants’ in those very backyards. Wood products are everywhere and we look for the highest best uses for the most available species in forms both attractive and useful to our sophisticated consumers. We use Ponderosa, Douglas Fir, White fir and other species from regional forest management efforts as well as fire burned, ‘reclaimed’ materials. Mesquite is gotten from well-run efforts in Texas, Pinon/Juniper/Salt Cedar are generally from Alamo Navajo. We have ‘projects’ going in Hermosillo Mexico and elsewhere for mesquite, oak and other interesting, well-gotten woods. We are always on the lookout for partners and collaborators with a shared vision for ‘well done’ forestry benefitting the ‘greater good’.
