The practice is a low-cost and low-energy consumption rural assistance project initiated by the government. After its completion, the project will serve as the first batch of state-run model kindergarten in Yangxi County, aiming to narrow the educational gap between urban and rural areas, and promote the development of preschool education for rural children. This 15-class kindergarten, which can accommodate 450 children, includes living rooms, kitchen, healthcare center, as well as classrooms for music, physical education, science, art and craft.
The overall planning focuses on the rhythm of children's daily life and strives for a scientific and reasonable functional layout. Buildings are scattered within the L-shaped site, outdoor activity area is mainly located in the center. The main teaching space takes "cell" as the prototype motif, breaks down the whole into several standard module boxes, twists along with the site, and is connected by air corridors.
Yangxi County is hot and rainy in summer. To cope with the weather change, passive energy-saving technologies are given priority in the design. The connection between various functional modules is enhanced through elevated corridors. The first floor grey space and the second floor viewing platform are provided, which not only enhances the space utilization rate and the continuity of children's activities, but improves natural ventilation and site microclimate. The design attempts to take the characteristics of the "orchard" as elements, extracting images such as "broad leaves" and "sprouts", integrating them into the building. Under the sunlight, the "crown-shaped" columns freely support the activity platform, forming an open and shared space full of exploration and childlike fun.
Architects adopt mature and reliable frame structures and local materials, reducing the construction cost and difficulty. In terms of facade design, white is used as the main color tone. White exterior wall paint is low in cost, convenient for construction and maintenance, etc.
To enhance the interest and lively atmosphere, more public elevated spaces and even circular running tracks are set up on different floors. Under the sunlight, the "crown-shaped" columns freely support the activity platform, forming an open and shared space full of exploration and childlike fun.
The public activity space on the stilt floor effectively reduces sun exposure, creates a well-ventilated and cooling environment, and combines the preservation and utilization of the original vegetation to create a comfortable, safe and environmentally friendly learning and living space.
